Theoretical and practical use of methods in derivative-free optimization with applications

We will begin with the fundamental theoretical framework for model based derivative free optimization. This will be followed by some recent re nements and related work.
Subsequently we will talk about some implications for using derivative-free methods for complex real problems involving a subset of such diverse topics as simulation methods, applications in upstream petroleum, strategic nancial
planning and air-trac control.
The intent is to make most of the talk accessible to non-experts, who have possible applications, at a level that they can begin to consider such methods for their own work.
